Here's another vampire book review. I really enjoyed this one. It's Evernight by Claudia Gray. Any vampire book lover should buy this one and read it. I didn't love it at first, but by the end, I did. Lucas is just angsty enough to do it for me. I've started reading the sequel, Stargazer, and all of my feelings and hunches about the angstiness of the boys has been confirmed. Lucas and Balthazar make these books worth reading.

I read the first three books of the Vampire Diaries in anticipation of the launch of the television show next Thursday.

Spoiler Free Review before the cut: The first two books are wonderful. I love them, oh how I love them! You can buy them sold together in one book, and it is such an amazing read. I absolutely, positively love Stefan. He's perfect for me. Angsty vampire with a propensity for getting hurt, hates what he is, but loves the girl. Classic angsty vampire stuff. Really, everything about the first two books is perfect, classic hurt/comfort. I enjoyed every single page. Now, the main girl, Elena, everyone is going to hate, I think. But it's okay. We don't really read books for the girls, do we? Stefan makes the books worth reading.

But then I read book three. I will not spoil this for anyone, but I will warn--do not, I repeat, do not read book three. I know you want to. I know book two had a huge cliff hanger and the first two were so wonderful, how could it possibly be that bad? Don't buy it. Don't read it. That's all I'm going to say.

I scanned the summaries on wikipedia for books four, five, and the upcoming six. Needless to say, I'm not going to be reading them.

But I am going to watch the television show when it starts next Thursday. They've messed everything up. The girl is supposed to be blonde. This really bothers me. Stefan is supposed to be hot! But I'll watch it anyway. It looks like they are changing enough that maybe they'll go a completely different direction and I won't hate the events of book three. Or maybe it will take so long to get there, I won't care. As long as they accurately capture the Stefan angst and throw in the hurt/comfort, I'll be happy.

Spoiler free version--There were some parts that I was soooo impressed with and loved. And other parts I was sooooo disappointed with. All in all, they canceled each other out. I enjoyed it. I'd see it again, but it wasn't as perfect as I was hoping or as awful as I feared.

I am seriously in love with this fic. Everyone on my list needs to go read it. It's got some of the best Jasper characterization I've seen.

Why I like it: The characterization in this story is absolutely perfect. Every line, every sentence, every word has Jasper exactly right. I love any story dealing with his scars, but there is something magical about this one. I’m sure this is exactly how Alice and Jasper were early in their relationship. Jasper’s hurt really makes my heart clench, and then there’s Alice comfort. It’s perfect and everything I want a Twilight story to be.

We’re going to visit Jasper during his time with Peter and journey with him as Alice begins to mend his broken soul. However, this story, which will be a much later story in the series, just demanded to be written. I couldn’t get it out of my head! Since this story, really only required the background of the first story to make sense, I decided to go ahead and share it with everyone on LJ. Readers on archive sites will have to wait until I get to this part in the story, which is going to be a long while. This story can stand alone as long as you’ve read “In Her Power.” Reading that story is really necessary to understand my Jasper and Maria characterization.

Why I Like It: It's heart breaking, like so many of pinkowitch's stories are. My heart aches for Jasper every time that I read this. She manages to write it in such a way that you can just FEEL Jasper's pain, literally feel it yourself. Also, I love the way she shows Jasper's mindset. He never can quite accept that he deserves love. The story is amazing, breathtaking . . . go read it!

Author’s Notes: This story is the first of many in a new series I’m writing. The “Incomplete Without You” series will follow Jasper’s story from Maria to meeting Alice and joining the Cullens. Each story can stand alone, but they are meant to be read as a series. Later stories will have more meaning if you’ve read the earlier ones. The early stories are angst stories, but they will lead to hurt/comfort stories with Alice.

Reading between the lines of Jasper’s story in Eclipse, this is the vision of Jasper’s life with Maria that immediately came to me. It’s different than many interpretations of the Maria time that I’ve seen, but if you reread chapter 13 of Eclipse, I truly believe you’ll see where my ideas come from.

Parts of this story were influenced by the amazing story “The Sum of Him” by keeper_of_stars. Right wrist is used with permission. My Jasper is also influenced by the work of very talented pinkowitch. Parts of her Jasper have rubbed off onto mine, and vice-versa.

I also have a note. pinkowitch and I have been staying up all night most nights talking about Jasper and writing together. I'm writing a series of stories that start with Maria and go all the way into the Twilight series. None of mine is published yet, but a lot of it is already written. Our Jaspers are similar, but different. Our Alices are very different. Inevitably, parts of our stories are rubbing off on each other. We beta for each other, we help each other write when we get stuck, we talk about characterization non-stop. There are parts of her story that are making their way into mine, and I can see my influence on her stories. I just wanted to let everybody know that we aren't stealing from each other or anything. It's just a natural consequences of the amount of time we're spending helping each other. The stories are still very different, because we have some critical differences, but I think you will notice our influence on each other.
